The World Trade Center and the number Eleven
Many people enjoy a good numerology coincidence, judging from the popularity of the following list. Within hours after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, this list spread rapidly across the internet, flooding email inboxes, message boards, and making itself at home on hundreds of websites.
The date of the attack: 9/11 - 9+1+1 = 11
September 11th is the 254th day of the year: 2+5+4 = 11
After September 11th there are 111 days left to the end of the year.
119 is the area code to Iraq/Iran. 1+1+9 = 11
Twin Towers - standing side by side, looks like the number 11
The first plane to hit the towers was Flight 11
State of New York - The 11th State added to the Union
New York City - 11 Letters
Afghanistan - 11 Letters
The Pentagon - 11 Letters
Ramzi Yousef - 11 Letters
(convicted of orchestrating the attack on the WTC in 1993)
Flight 11 - 92 on board - 9+2 = 11
Flight 77 - 65 on board - 6+5 = 11
Perhaps in recalling the shock from watching video replays of the planes crashing into the buildings, the mind numbing horror of it, and the seeming senselessness of this monstrous attack on American civilians, it is not so surprising that many people are emotionally primed to wonder about these coincidences. Considering the circumstances, it is without a doubt a fascinating list.
However, to attach any significance to this list beyond its amusement value is to commit a cognitive error. My peeve is with people who promote this error, this fallacy, who attempt to persuade others to buy into the mistaken notion that these coincidences demonstrate some kind of synchronicity, or who use this list to further their own crackpot agendas. For example: Uri Geller, Victor Zammit, Lee Carroll, Sally Faubion, and others.
The first thing to notice is that this list contains factual errors. Curiously, even after several months, these errors have still not been corrected on the websites of Zammit, Carroll, or Faubion. I leave readers to draw their own conclusions about what that says about these people.
The telephone country code (area code) for Iran is 98 and Iraq is 964. Neither adds up to eleven.
Flight 77 did not crash into the World Trade Center. Flight 175 did. No eleven here either.
And this leads directly to the next thing to notice about this list, the things that are missing from it. For example:
The number of hijackers was not eleven.
The number of planes hijacked was not eleven.
The full date 2001-09-11 does not add up to eleven.
The Islamic Calendar date (1422-06-22) does not add up to eleven.
Manhattan does not have eleven letters.
World Trade Center does not have eleven letters.
etc, etc . . .
It doesn't take much investigation to notice that the vast majority of relevant facts do not add up to eleven. That list was fabricated using only a small number of carefully selected items that add up to eleven and discarding the majority of facts about the World Trade Center attack, the ones that aren't elevens. Such a list is based on a statistical fallacy, a numerical illusion.
Robert Carroll, Professor of Philosophy at Sacramento City College, comments on such coincidences in this excerpt from The Skeptic's Dictionary:
If we start hunting for items that seem relevant but don't fit the pattern, we will soon see that there is nothing special about Geller's list or the number 11. Only by focusing on anything that we can fit to our belief and ignoring everything that doesn't fit (confirmation bias) can we make these coincidences seem meaningful.
What Geller and other numerologists are doing is a game, a game played with numbers and with people's minds. Sometimes it is amusing. Sometimes it is pathetic.

And according to Hoax Watch editor Kevin Christopher of CSICOP:
People tend to be extremely poor judges of probability when it comes to coincidences. An excellent article by Bruce Martin in the September/October 1998 issue of Skeptical Inquirer, titled Coincidences: Remarkable or Random?, deals with what seem to be striking coincidences between assassinated U.S. presidents John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln, the likelihood of any two people sharing the same birthday, and other seemingly improbable phenomena.

For an example of the bizarre lengths some people will go with this numerological mumbo jumbo, check out this open letter to President George Bush from Keikhosrow Emami dated November 29, 2001:
Some people, though, will persist in making an error of cognition, of seeing something that isn't there in this list of elevens, and refuse to acknowledge that it is nothing more than a clever and amusing set of numerical coincidences. For them, perhaps Dave Pawson said it best in this widely circulated email:
Oh my God! How worried should I be? There are 11 letters in the name "David Pawson!" I'm going into hiding NOW. See you in a few weeks.
Wait a sec ... just realized "YOU CAN'T HIDE" also has 11 letters! What am I gonna do? Help me!!! The terrorists are after me! ME! I can't believe it!
Oh crap, there must be someplace on the planet Earth I could hide! But no... "PLANET EARTH" has 11 letters, too!
Maybe Nostradamus can help me. But dare I trust him? There are 11 letters in "NOSTRADAMUS."
I know, the Red Cross can help. No they can't... 11 letters in "THE RED CROSS," can't trust them.
I would rely on self defense, but "SELF DEFENSE" has 11 letters in it, too! Can someone help?
Anyone? If so, send me email. No, don't... "SEND ME EMAIL" has 11 letters....
Will this never end? I'm going insane! "GOING INSANE???" Eleven letters!!
Nooooooooooo!!!!!! I guess I'll die alone, even though "I'LL DIE ALONE" has 11 letters....
Oh my God, I just realized that America is doomed! Our Independence Day is July 4th ... 7/4 ... 7+4=11!
- Dave
PS. "IT'S BULLSHIT" has 11 letters also.
